In Focus Martin Sheen on Homeopathic Medicine
March 6th, 2013
See more reporting from In Focus Martin Sheen
In Focus Martin Sheen reviews many of the emerging trends in the medical industry, including how new therapies are gaining popularity with some Americans.
Homeopathic medicine represents an $860 million industry in the US. Many people are embracing homeopathic remedies and all-natural treatments because of concern of the number of chemicals we take into our bodies through medication. Others simply are interested in trying something new that might make a difference in their lives.
While some people are believers in homeopathic remedies, the industry does have critics. Many medical experts say there is no evidence than many of these remedies actually work, and that they can instill a false sense of confidence in the user. Doctors point out that homeopathic remedies do not undergo rigorous trials that are the hallmark of the medical industry when it comes to medications.
In Focus with Martin Sheen is looking at many of these remedies and talking to people in the homeopathy industry and the medical industry to get a variety of views on their effectiveness. This new report will air later this year on public television stations around the country and online at www.infocusptv.com.
In the coming months, the TV program In focus Martin Sheen PBS will be airing a number of reports that highlight topics inside the medical field. Viewers who are interested in these new reports can follow the team on Twitter @infocusms.

In Focus Martin Sheen on Alternative Energy Future
October 23rd, 2012
See more reporting from In Focus Martin Sheen
For many people, energy is an important pocketbook issue. The rising costs of fuel and electricity are impacting how people create their family budget, and that has people thinking about how our country might lower its energy costs. In Focus Martin Sheen is looking into energy issues for the TV show and our online friends at www.infocusptv.com.
Engineers are looking into new ways to cut our energy costs. Much of the price of energy is imbedded in the cost of the fossil fuels that are the beginnings of electricity. To cut these costs, experts are looking into more sustainable solutions that are much cheaper.
Wind power has been popular in other parts of the world, and it is making an appearance here in America. In the Midwest where there are open plains that allow winds to push large windmills, helping people in places like Iowa see lower energy costs.
In other parts of the country, In Focus PBS is watching to see how people are seeing lower energy costs by utilizing the power of the sun. In the future, many homes will include roof-mounted solar panels that can harvest energy and then store it in batteries.
These homeowners are seeing their energy costs go down and in some cases are even seeing a little extra money in their pockets by selling some of their stored electricity back to the power companies.
In Focus with Martin Sheen is working on several new reports about new alternative energy solutions. The TV program is announcing new reports that are not only talking about these new energy sources but how energy efficient homes are helping to cut costs.
At (561) 826-0675 the producers are talking to viewers and engineers to see how these new technologies will change the family budget and save Americans more money on high energy costs.

In Focus Martin Sheen on Smartphone Technology
October 18th, 2012
See reporting on mobile technology from In Focus Martin Sheen
On In Focus Martin Sheen, one of the most important issues that is covered by the TV show is the growing influence of the internet. While the technology is now as common as the telephone, it shares another similarity with the phone in that it is now completely mobile.
In the last 20 years mobile phone technology has become common, and that technology is now being used to offer mobile internet access. Neilsen reports that about 54 percent of all mobile phones in America are now smartphones, and it is giving people a way to connect to the limitless information of the internet from any location.
In Focus PBS is exploring how this mobile internet technology is opening a new chapter for web users. By giving people access from a park bench or any location, people are able to work more productively, stay in closer contact with friends and make better decisions with their money.
For businesses, this new internet access has changed how they approach the internet. Because a potential customer can access reviews of a company or product just moments before making a purchase, businesses are making sure that their brands are well represented online.
For customers, smartphones have given them the ability to purchase products anywhere. Some people are suspicious of purchasing products over mobile technology and a new series of In Focus Martin Sheen scam prevention reports will show people how to stay safe while using this technology.
The producers of the TV program are also placing new reporting on the website at www.infocusptv.com. In Focus with Martin Sheen can be reached at (561) 826-0675 for people to offer their own story ideas, experiences and opinions about the stories the series is covering.

Anatomy of a Role: Martin Sheen as Josiah Bartlet on The West Wing
July 19th, 2012
When Aaron Sorkin wrote his hit 1995 film “The American President,” there were several elements of life in the White House that he felt had been left on the table.
The film features Michael Douglas as a widower president trying to fill a romantic void. The film also featured a veteran actor who is also the host of In Focus Martin Sheen.
Avika Goldsman, Sorkin’s good friend and screenwriter of “A Beautiful Mind” encouraged Sorkin to create a new television series about the world of the American Presidency.
From that conversation sprang “The West Wing” starring Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Bradley Whitford and Stockard Channing.
Martin Sheen wasn’t the only man considered to play President Josiah Bartlet. Producers also considered Sidney Poitier and Alan Alda for the role, which they initially considered a small recurring part.
The show’s initial focus was to be on the people who make the White House run. Staffer Sam Seaborn played by Rob Lowe was to be the focus of the show, and that was reflected in the opening episode that only features Sheen for the last few minutes.
Sorkin and co-executive producers Thomas Schlamme and John Wells decided to move the focus of the show from a workplace drama that happened to be in the White House to a study of the complications of the most powerful office in the world.
As a result of the shift in the show’s philosophy, Martin Sheen’s role was greatly expanded. He went from initially being set to appear in just about four episodes a year to playing the pivotal role in almost every episode.
The show largely focuses on moral dilemmas faced by the fictional President Bartlet over wide range of issues. Committing American forces to combat, dealing with the death penalty and even an assassination attempt became fodder for the show’s writers.
Over the course of its run between 1999 and 2006, the show won 26 Emmy awards. Astonishingly, Sheen never won the award for his own work on the show. Martin Sheen did however win a Golden Globe in 2001 for his work.
The show remains the most honored drama in television history and is fourth in overall Emmy Awards. It also won a prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting.

In Focus Martin Sheen on Substance Abuse Treatment
July 5th, 2012
The In Focus with Martin Sheen TV program often highlights advances in the medical field that are helping people live healthier lives and one particular area of medicine that is advancing is the treatment of substance abuse.
According to a 2009 study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, nearly one in ten Americans over the age of 12 are dealing with some sort of substance abuse or addiction issue.
In Focus PBS at 561-907-9280 found that of the more than 20 million Americans suffering from addiction, only a small percentage actually receive treatment while others suffer silently or die from their addictions.
Many communities around the country offer either non-profit or for-profit treatment options. They range in the type of care from outpatient counseling through long term in patient therapy. Treatments will often include individualized care in addition to group settings offering addicts to talk to other sharing the same issues.
In many treatments centers patients are exposed either to 12-step programs or alternative forms of treatment to break the cycle of addiction. Many addiction therapists now believe that one of the best forms of treatment and continued maintenance of the disease of addiction is for recovering addicts to rely on others in recovery for support.
Considering how valuable contact with other recovering addicts can be, transitional housing has become a popular way for addicts to re-integrate themselves into society after recovery begins.
Transitional housing allows the recovering substance abuser to enjoy a structured life where they can have a high level of exposure to a recovery program. While they build a new lifestyle free from the environmental pressures that were part of their addiction, people in recovery can work and play with others who are sharing their journey.
By moving to another community, the addict is able to create separation with their former lives and make new friends without the pressure to return to self-destructive habits.
The In Focus Martin Sheen TV show is online at www.infocusptv.com where audiences can see more topics like addiction that are covered by the broadcast. Through treatment, people suffering from addiction and other diseases of the mind and body are learning new ways to reclaim their lives.

In Focus Martin Sheen on Nutritional Therapy
June 20th, 2012
As In Focus Martin Sheen continues to monitor trends in the medical field, one of the most interesting developments is the augmentation of non-traditional treatments with the wonders of Western medicine.
Many traditional medical professionals are incorporating new and innovative approaches to disease prevention and treatment into a more familiar medical regimen. Many traditional treatments have been covered by the TV program and can be found online at www.infocusptv.com.
In Focus PBS found that nutritional counseling based on sound scientific research coupled with a holistic approach is helping patients.
Nutritional therapists recognize the individual biochemical needs of the patient and help to develop a diet that helps to increase energy and boost the immune system. By catering a diet to the patient based on where they live, their body type, current diet, genetics and gender a therapist can work with the patient to develop a tailor-made regimen.
In addition to the variables introduced by the specific patient, a therapist can also draw on basic tenets of dietary science such as the importance of watching blood sugar, mineral and fat balances and hydration.
Overall, the theory is that if the body receives the right raw materials through diet, the patient is in the best position to prevent illness and disease but improve their prognosis when they are sick.
Doctors at the Medical University of South Carolina say that nutritional therapy is the cornerstone of fighting chronic disease in patients with diabetes. In fact, the medical community has become so convinced of the benefits of the therapy that Medicare now recognizes it as a real way to prevent and combat disease.
In Focus with Martin Sheen at 561-907-9280 continues to cover medical advancement both on the TV show and online. Nutritional therapy has taken the old adage about an apple a day and developed it into a full plan for people to live longer, healthier lives.
